Annotated Bibliography 3 (Assignment 22)

Liou, S. (2017, July 25). The Ethics of Animal Experimentation. Retrieved March 26, 2018, from http://web.stanford.edu/group/hopes/cgi-bin/hopes_test/animal-research/

This article discusses the ethics of animal experimentation. Instead of being an article that focuses on one side of the argument, this article hopes to display all the sides that one may take in this complex argument. For example, there are 3 sections, one for animal experimentation, one against, and a section that represents those who are in the middle ground. In this way, the article presents the arguments of all sides concerning the topic and hopes to educate the reader. The argument presented for those for animal experimentation, is that animals or morally below humans. The belief is that they are mentally and morally below humans, which allows for a morally higher species, humans, to experiment on them. The opposite is said for those against animal experimentation on animals, who believe that animals belong in the same moral category as humans, and thus it would be wrong for us to exploit them. The last perspective is those who see it from a middle ground. They believe animal experimentation to be wrong, but see the benefits of it. Thus, through this article, we can see all the sides of the animal experimentation argument. Some potential quotes are.... "An important part of the debate over animal rights centers on the question of the moral status of an animal." (Liou 5.) "The claim is that animals should be afforded the same level of respectful treatment as humans; in short, we should not have the right to kill animals, force them into our service, or otherwise treat them merely as means to further our own goals." (Liou 6.) "If animals do not have the same rights as humans, it becomes permissible to use them for research purposes." (Liou 12.) "Accordingly, potential animal rights violations are outweighed by the greater human benefits of animal research." (Liou 14.)

I believe this source to be incredibly credible. The article came from a website created by Stanford students and professors hoping to educate others about Huntington's disease. The article was written by a Stanford student. Furthermore, the student was unbiased and included all parts of the argument. I think this source will fit in perfectly in my topic. Since, it presents all the side of the argument, I can use the information to argue any standpoint.
